Over the years, returning-residents have been given either incorrect or very little information when returning home. This is where confusion and complaints can arise, so we hope do go some way to correcting this situation.

Firstly to qualify as a “Returning resident” you should have lived or worked outside Jamaica for at least three years.

Secondly you should not have made any major shipments within the last twelve months. These points are normally ascertained when you attend your interview with the customs officer.

You would expect to pay little or no duty on your personal effects, once you have confirmed your status with the Commissioner of Customs, depending on nature of the goods packed in your container. We will normally warn you if you are likely to pay any customs duty.
